How to Apply

The institution is to submit a letter of intention along with the general information of the institution, for assessment and accreditation.  NAAC will scrutinise the information and inform the institution of its eligibility.  On receiving a positive response from NAAC, the institution has to send the prescribed fee for assessment and accreditation.  On receipt of the fee, NAAC will send the manuals and guidelines that will enable the institution to initiate the process of self-assessment. 

Units           

The prime agenda of NAAC is to assess and accredit institutions of higher education.  Assessment means performance evaluation of the unit of  assessment and accreditation is the certification given to the unit of assessment which is valid for a stipulated period of time.  There are two types of accreditation - institutional and departmental.  With reference to the type of accreditation, the following are defined as units of assessment: 

 

 

 

 

 

Institutional Accreditation

·        University: University Central Governance Structure along with all the Under Graduate and Post Graduate Departments.

·        College: Any College - affiliated, autonomous or constituent - with all its departments of studies.

Departmental Accreditation

·        Department: Any single subject based department

Fees & Expenses           

The GC of NAAC has fixed the accreditation fees for institutional accreditation as follows: 

Universities:

·        Upto four departments - Rs.75000/- 

·        More than four and upto 10 depts.Rs.75000/- + Rs.7500 for every additional department

·        More than 10 departments Rs.120000/- + Rs.5000 for every additional department 

Financial Support

In the case of universities, UGC at its meeting held on July 29, 1997 stated that "...the payment of assessment and accreditation cost to NAAC, upto a maximum of Rs.5.00 lakhs in the case of large universities, may be accepted as admissible item for plan grant of the respective universities by the commission. The grant for this purpose may be released to concerned university."
